لم تكن خسارة المنتخب اليمني أمام قطر بهدف دون مقابل نهاية سهلة لقصة مباراة قاتل خلالها لاعبو اليمن حتى اللحظات الأخيرة، وقدموا حضوراً لافتاً رغم الفارق في الإمكانات، في اللقاء الذي جمعهما على ملعب مدينة الملك عبدالله الرياضية بجدة، ضمن منافسات الجولة الثانية من دور المجموعات لمنافسات خليجي 27.
دخل اليمن المواجهة بطموح الخروج بنتيجة إيجابية، ونجح في الحفاظ على تماسكه ومجاراة المنتخب القطري، لتبقى المباراة مفتوحة حتى نجح المنتخب القطري في تسجيل هدف التقدم.
ورغم تأخره، تمسك المنتخب اليمني بفرصته، وواصل البحث عن هدف يعيد المباراة إلى نقطة البداية، وظل حاضراً في المشهد حتى صافرة النهاية، دون أن يتمكن من إدراك التعادل.
خرج اليمن من المواجهة خاسراً بهدف، لكنه ترك خلفه صورة مختلفة، بعدما أثبت أن النتيجة لم تعكس حجم ما قدمه داخل الملعب، في مباراة كان فيها قريباً من انتزاع نتيجة أفضل، ليودع خليجي 27 من دور المجموعات.
