England coach Thomas Tuchel launched a tirade against his players after the thrilling 2-3 loss to Spain in the opening of the Nations League, confirming that fatal mistakes gifted the win to La Roja.
Tuchel said: “We made silly mistakes in the first 12 minutes and in the equalizing moment, and Spain was calmer and more precise in punishing us.” Despite leading 2-1 in the first half, he admitted: “We wanted to be the ones to defeat the best team in the world and felt we were capable... but we lost.”
He defended the exclusion of Arnold: “The match required a tremendous defensive effort; I needed a fast full-back to play as a third center-back,” and he justified not including Lewis Hall due to unpreparedness.
He revealed shocking statistics during the press conference held after the match: “We won back 15 balls in Spain's half more than they did... but we failed in the final third; we lacked calmness and decisiveness in the last 20 meters, otherwise we would have won.”
He concluded with a warning message before the clash with the Czech Republic: “There’s no point in scolding every player... there are many mistakes, but there are positives... we need the points and qualification, and there’s no alternative to winning in Prague!”
