The coach of the Saudi national team, Donis, confirmed that the Green Team is still at the beginning of the phase of building and developing the team, emphasizing his confidence in the current group and their ability to evolve and compete for the championship title, while stressing the importance of treating each match individually and not rushing through the stages.
Donis said: "I believe that as a team we are still at the beginning. The previous phase was not easy, but the players have given us, especially in the friendly and preparatory matches, indicators of the way we want to play."
He explained that the coaching staff is working to reach a stage where offensive and defensive duties become more instinctive for the players, adding: "We need to develop as a team step by step. We have made some progress, but we are still at the beginning of the road."
Donis expressed his satisfaction with what the Saudi national team presented in the first half against Oman, confirming that his admiration was not limited to offensive performance, possession, and creating chances, but also included the fighting spirit, responsibility, and collective pressure when losing the ball.
He added: "I know that fans and the media love attacking football, but what impressed me was the passion of the players, their fight for the ball, and their responsibility on the field."
On the other hand, he did not hide his dissatisfaction with the performance in the second half, pointing out that the team retreated in pressure and allowed the Omani team some clear chances, despite the Green Team having opportunities that could have raised their tally to five or six goals.
He stressed the necessity of maintaining level consistency throughout the match, confirming that the team needs to deliver the same performance for 90 minutes, not just 60 minutes, while noting the improvement that appeared in the offensive level.
Donis urged his players to raise their concentration levels in all details of their work, whether in the hotel, meetings, locker room, or during warm-ups and matches, considering that focus is one of the most important keys to development.
He also emphasized the importance of increasing communication among players on the field and ensuring that each player knows the characteristics of their teammates, explaining that building harmony helps the team make the right decisions, especially under pressure.
Regarding changes and rotation in the lineup, Donis confirmed that these are natural decisions given that they are playing a match every three days, explaining that the coaching staff has information about the physical condition of the players that is not available to everyone, and one of them may be suffering from fatigue, stiffness, or be at risk of injury.
He confirmed that the priority is to protect the players, in addition to giving the opportunity to the rest of the group to prove their abilities, saying: "We cannot build a strong team relying on just 11 players. I want every player, when we need them and they enter the field, to say with their performance: I am here, coach."
Donis addressed the injuries affecting the team, noting that there are several absences that require the coaching staff to handle the players' readiness with caution, while also confirming that he does not use injuries as an excuse for results.
He revealed that one player suffered a knee injury, explaining that the coaching staff is waiting for the results of the examinations to determine the nature of the injury and the duration of absence, expressing hope that the best-case scenario would be a recovery period of three to four weeks. He also mentioned the improvement in Mohammed Al-Qahtani's condition, awaiting the green light from the medical staff to return to training.
In discussing the criticisms directed at some players, Donis confirmed his commitment to protecting all team members and supporting them technically, tactically, and mentally, rejecting the targeting of one or two players and holding them responsible for the team's performance or results.
He said: "When we play well, the success belongs to the entire group, and all players are important to me," considering that media criticism and differing opinions are a natural part of football and should be accepted.
Regarding the Green Team's chances in the tournament, Donis renewed his confidence in his players, but he refused to jump directly to talk about winning the title, saying: "We believe in ourselves and our work day by day. I do not like to say that we are ready to win the title; the most important thing is to develop from one match to another, reach the final, and then fight for the championship."
He concluded by emphasizing that possessing the mentality and spirit demonstrated by the team in the first half, fighting for every ball, and playing responsibly gives the Green Team a chance to compete, stressing that the upcoming phase requires more work, focus, communication, and harmony to build a strong team capable of achieving its goals.
