The story of Mamelodi Sundowns began in the 1960s when it was founded by a group of young men in the Marabastad area of Pretoria, before the club moved to the Mamelodi area and took its well-known name later. Since those humble beginnings, a long journey began that made it one of the most prominent clubs in South African football.
The road was not easy; in 1980, the team was relegated to the second division and remained there for several years, before returning to the forefront in 1985 with the arrival of Zola Mahobe, who brought a significant transformation to the club, leading to a period of local success and titles.
By the end of the 1990s, Sundowns entered a new phase of continental competition, successfully reaching the final of the CAF Champions League in 2001, but lost to Al Ahly of Egypt, leaving the continental dream postponed for years.
Then came the moment the club had long awaited in 2016, when South African coach Pitso Mosimane led the team to its first title in the CAF Champions League, after defeating Egyptian Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate, before adding the African Super Cup. That victory was a turning point in the club's history.
Since then, Sundowns has continued to maintain a strong presence both locally and continentally, becoming one of the clubs with consistency in African competitions, while its name has been associated with the title "The Brazilians," referring to its style of play and its yellow and blue colors.
