The Colombian striker Brian Leon, star of South African Sundowns, spoke to FIFA's official website about the anticipated match that will bring his team together with the national representative, Al Ahly, next Saturday for the Tri-Continental Cup of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific as part of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Leon played a pivotal role in Mameloody Sundowns' victory in the African Champions League and is now looking to make his mark in the FIFA Africa, Asia, and Pacific Cup.
Brian Leon began his journey with Mameloody Sundowns last January and quickly made a clear impact with the team, scoring five goals during Sundowns' campaign in the African Champions League, as well as netting 18 goals in 35 matches wearing the team's jersey.
The striker contributed to the South African club's triumph in the African Champions League and is now eager to make a difference when facing his team Al Ahly in the FIFA Africa, Asia, and Pacific Cup, as part of the FIFA Club World Cup 2026™.
Sundowns will host their Saudi counterpart Al Ahly in Pretoria on Saturday, September 19, relying on their player who joined from Deportivo Independiente Medellín to lead the team in this encounter.
You have an important week ahead with the arrival of Al Ahly. How are you preparing for this match?
Brian Leon: I feel very calm personally, and I am not under any pressure at all. This is how you should approach this type of match; there’s no need to impose pressure on ourselves. That feeling will come the day before the match or while we are on our way to the stadium. That is the kind of pressure we need, the spark that ignites your enthusiasm.
When you play a final match, you have to approach it this way. In my opinion, every match should be played with the same enthusiasm. You have to feel the pressure, but during the short period leading up to the match, without it, it’s very difficult to give your best.
You will be playing at home with the support of about 50,000 fans. How much of an advantage will that give you?
Playing at home can only be a positive thing. The support of the fans gives you a huge boost. For me, it doesn’t matter what type of match or who the opponent is; when your fans cheer for you, nothing compares to that. We must give our fans the appreciation they deserve, as they constantly support us and always ensure we feel that we are not alone.
You will face a team that includes several prominent stars, such as Edouard Mendy, Demiral, Trincao, and Ivan Toney. How will you handle this challenge?
We are well aware of the level of players they have, the strength of their lineup and its depth, as well as the quality and potential they possess. They are the champions of Asia, and we are the champions of Africa, and they think of us in the same way.
If you get past this stage, you might face a Mexican team like Toluca or the Copa Libertadores champion from South America. How special would it be to face such a match?
That match would mean a lot to me, as we would be facing a strong opponent experienced in finals. Football there is very different from how it is played and experienced here, so it will be a very exciting football event. Mameloody Sundowns previously faced Fluminense competitively in the 2025 Club World Cup, so the team has already experienced the level of these encounters. However, qualifying for the next stage and facing one of those clubs would be a huge achievement.
How did you adapt to the atmosphere upon arriving at Mameloody Sundowns?
I decided to take on this experience and come here, even though the beginning was tough. When someone talks about moving to South Africa, the first thing that comes to mind is the very long distance, along with the complete cultural differences. But once you arrive, you realize you have joined the best club here, and you are playing alongside the best players in a top-notch professional environment. When you look at the team members, you find that most of them have participated in the World Cup, and the majority represent their national teams. This is a club that serves as a major feeder for the national team and aims to win all possible titles.
And you couldn’t have started your journey at the club any better, after the team won its second title in the African Champions League...
The team welcomed me warmly from the very first moment. My teammates quickly understood what I wanted. I told them how I prefer to play and that I need their help if we want to win all the titles, and that’s exactly what happened. For me, the African Champions League journey was the most important. I joined the team and then won the biggest title in African football, which is the tournament where we prove that we are the best team on the continent. I felt overwhelming joy after winning the title. When I joined the club, they told me that we had to win the tournament, and that’s exactly what we did.
What do you remember about the moment you lifted the trophy?
When you hold the trophy in your hands, you realize that this is the goal that brought you here. You achieve what you came for, and you feel a real pride in becoming part of history. Everyone says it’s the most important tournament in Africa, and when you lift its cup, you understand why. I was on top of the world during that moment.
We are still the champions, but nothing compares to the moment of lifting the trophy. Also, everything we went through along the way made the achievement more special. I joined the club in the middle of the tournament, so I feel a great pride in what I was able to achieve in such a short time.
You are coached by Miguel Cardoso, who has been leading the team for about two years. How would you describe working under his leadership?
The coach knows African football inside out. He has reached the African Champions League final three times; he was unlucky in the first two occasions, but he succeeded in the third. He deserves all the appreciation for the work he has done; he is one of the best coaches on the continent. He knows the game in all its details and understands the requirements for success. We have to follow his guidance; if he makes a mistake, we all make mistakes with him. For me, he is a top-notch coach.
I admire his deep understanding of the players. If one of us feels frustrated, he comes to talk to us, and he does the same if you are not fully fit or have been injured. He is always keen to check on you. When I arrived here, he would call me to see how I was adapting, whether it was to the country, the city, the home, or the team, and he was always ready to help me with anything I needed.
