A formal acknowledgment from the English referees' association shook the atmosphere of the Manchester derby, after Manchester United was informed of an error in the VAR decision related to Erling Haaland's goal during the recent match against Manchester City, a goal that sparked widespread controversy over a player's interference in an offside position and its impact on the course of the attack.
According to what was reported by the Guardian, Haaland was not in an offside position at the moment the ball was passed, while the debate revolved around his teammate who was in an illegal position and attempted to reach the ball, at a time when a United defender was dealing with the attack. The association clarified that the video referee should have summoned the main referee to review the incident on the pitch screen, instead of merely confirming the validity of the goal.
The newspaper noted that the referees' association contacted Manchester United to inform them of the error following objections from the coaching staff, but the acknowledgment did not change anything in the match result, as the goal remained counted, allowing Manchester City to secure the derby, while the incident opened a new avenue for discussion regarding the mechanism of VAR intervention in cases where an offside player is influential in the course of play.
The acknowledgment reignited the debate over the criteria for intervention in sensitive incidents and raised questions about the consistency of VAR decisions in major matches, especially those that have a direct impact on the outcomes of crucial encounters.
