Gold prices fell today (Monday), amid rising oil prices and increasing concerns about inflation, which bolstered expectations for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates during its monetary policy meeting this week.
Gold dropped 0.5% in spot transactions to $4,327.09 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures fell 0.9% to $4,367.50 per ounce.
Expectations for an interest rate hike increased after data showed a surge in consumer prices in the United States during August, with markets currently pricing in about an 87% chance of a rate increase during the Federal Reserve's meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Gold is typically viewed as a hedge against inflation; however, rising interest rates diminish the appeal of the non-yielding precious metal.
As for other precious metals, silver fell 1% to $63.80 per ounce, platinum decreased 0.2% to $1,792.59, while palladium dropped 0.4% to $1,293.86.
