With the countdown to the launch of the new Roshen sports season on August 13, 2026, attention is turning to one of the most exciting and complex seasons in recent years. Amid local competition ambitions, continental and international commitments, and the pressure of a busy schedule, clubs and players are preparing for a long test that requires physical readiness, mental toughness, and the ability to handle unprecedented challenges throughout the season.
Football and fitness coach Captain Khaled Mohammed told "Okaz" that the upcoming Roshen season will be one of the most challenging in terms of technical, physical, and psychological management for clubs, players, and coaches due to the overlap of tournaments and the density of matches throughout the season. The biggest challenge lies in how to deal with a crowded schedule of matches, as the organizing bodies have considered about 80 days allocated for international breaks and the national team, in addition to preparations related to hosting the AFC Asian Cup 2027. In contrast, the actual duration for holding the 34 rounds of the Roshen League, which includes 306 matches, is 102 days, necessitating careful planning to ensure the regularity of the competition and maintain competitive fairness among all clubs.
He explained that the pressure of the schedule is not only due to the number of matches but also extends to the necessity of providing appropriate rest periods for players, especially during phases where league matches overlap with external competitions. Coaching staff will be required to manage players' physical exertion professionally, relying more on rotation of the lineup and giving opportunities to substitute players to maintain the team's readiness throughout the season.
He pointed out that the participation of 8 Saudi clubs in 4 different external tournaments represents an additional challenge, as these clubs will be forced to undertake long travel journeys and play high-level matches abroad, while continuing local competition. This will increase the difficulty of scheduling matches and rest days, especially during the last third of the season, which usually witnesses critical stages in the league, cups, and continental tournaments.
Regarding the psychological aspect, Captain Mohammed emphasized that the mental factor may be more important than the physical factor at certain stages of the season. A player who plays a match every few days and lives under the pressure of results and public and media expectations needs continuous psychological preparation to maintain focus and motivation. Additionally, the mental fatigue resulting from continuous travel and competing on multiple fronts may affect performance levels and decision-making on the field.
He indicated that the successful clubs during the upcoming season will be those that possess a comprehensive system that includes technical, medical, and psychological staff, along with management capable of dealing with unforeseen changes. The role of fans will also be important in supporting players during difficult periods that may witness temporary declines in results due to the pressure of matches.
Captain Khaled Mohammed concluded by stating: The 2026-2027 sports season represents a real test of Saudi football's capabilities at all levels. The challenges are significant, but success in overcoming them will reflect the development witnessed in Saudi sports and will provide clubs and national teams with a new opportunity to assert their strong presence locally, continentally, and internationally.
