عين الاتحاد المكسيكي لكرة القدم، المدافع الدولي السابق رافائيل ماركيز مدربا للمنتخب الأول، وذلك بعد يومين من خروج المكسيك من الدور ثمن النهائي لكأس العالم 2026، التي تستضيفها بالاشتراك مع الولايات المتحدة وكندا وتستمر حتى التاسع عشر من يوليو الجاري.
وأوضح الاتحاد، في بيان، أن ماركيز (47 عاما) سيخلف المدرب خافيير أغيري، بعدما شغل منصب مساعده في الجهاز الفني، مشيرا إلى أن تعيينه يهدف إلى ضمان استمرارية المشروع الذي أطلقه أغيري عام 2024، والذي انتهى بخسارة المنتخب أمام إنجلترا بنتيجة 2 - 3 في الدور ثمن النهائي من كأس العالم.
وأضاف البيان أن تعيين ماركيز يهدف أيضا إلى تعزيز مسيرة تطوير المنتخب والاستعداد للاستحقاقات الدولية القادمة، وفي مقدمتها بطولة الكأس الذهبية (كونكاكاف) المقررة في نهاية عام 2026.
وخاض ماركيز 147 مباراة دولية مع منتخب المكسيك، وشارك في خمس نسخ من كأس العالم أعوام 2002 و2006 و2010 و2014 و2018، وحمل شارة القيادة في أربع منها، كما توج مع المنتخب بلقب كأس القارات 1999، وحل وصيفا لبطولة كوبا أمريكا 2001.
The Mexican Football Federation has appointed former international defender Rafael Márquez as the head coach of the national team, just two days after Mexico was eliminated in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States and Canada and will continue until July 19.
The federation explained in a statement that Márquez (47 years old) will succeed coach Javier Aguirre, after serving as his assistant in the coaching staff. It noted that his appointment aims to ensure the continuity of the project launched by Aguirre in 2024, which ended with the national team losing to England 2-3 in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.
The statement added that Márquez's appointment also aims to enhance the development of the national team and prepare for upcoming international competitions, foremost among them the Gold Cup (CONCACAF) scheduled for the end of 2026.
Márquez has played 147 international matches with the Mexican national team and participated in five World Cup editions in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018, captaining the team in four of them. He also won the Confederations Cup in 1999 with the national team and was a runner-up in the Copa América in 2001.
