شهد كأس العالم 1994 بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية حدثاً غير عادي ولم يتحطم إلى اﻵن، إذ بلغ الفارق العمري بين زميلي المنتخب الكاميروني روجيه ميلا وريغوبيرت سونغ 24 عاماً و42 يوماً، وهو الرقم القياسي الأكبر بين زميلين في تاريخ البطولة.
وفي تلك النسخة، أصبح ميلا، بعمر 42 عاماً، أول لاعب ميداني في الأربعينيات من عمره يشارك في كأس العالم، بينما شكّل استدعاء سونغ، الذي كان يبلغ 17 عاماً فقط، مفاجأة كبيرة، بعدما جاء بطلب وإصرار من ميلا نفسه.
وقال سونغ عن تلك اللحظة: «لم أصدق أنني أصبحت ضمن الفريق. كنت قد تابعت كأس العالم 1990 عبر تلفاز أبيض وأسود، وكنت معجباً جداً بروجيه ميلا. لقد منح الكاميرون فرحة هائلة». وأضاف: «لم يخطر ببالي قط، حتى في أحلامي، أنني سأكون زميله في الفريق في كأس العالم بعد 4 سنوات فقط! كنتُ في الـ17 من عمري، وكان هو روجيه ميلا».
بينما قال ميلا عن ذلك: «إنه إنجاز أفتخر به. لقد أثبتنا أن الكاميرون أرضٌ زاخرة بالمواهب، وأننا لا نعاني من فجوة بين الأجيال».
The 1994 World Cup in the United States witnessed an extraordinary event that remains unbroken to this day, as the age difference between Cameroonian teammates Roger Milla and Rigobert Song was 24 years and 42 days, which is the largest record between two teammates in the history of the tournament.
In that edition, Milla, at the age of 42, became the first outfield player in his forties to participate in the World Cup, while the call-up of Song, who was only 17 years old, came as a huge surprise, after being requested and insisted upon by Milla himself.
Song said about that moment: "I couldn't believe I was part of the team. I had watched the 1990 World Cup on my father's black and white TV, and I was a huge fan of Roger Milla. He brought immense joy to Cameroon." He added: "It never crossed my mind, not even in my dreams, that I would be his teammate in the World Cup just 4 years later! I was 17 years old, and he was Roger Milla."
Meanwhile, Milla said about it: "It's an achievement I take pride in. We proved that Cameroon is a land rich in talent, and that we do not suffer from a generational gap."
