قررت السلطات في مدينة كلكتا الهندية إزالة التمثال العملاق للأسطورة الأرجنتينية ليونيل ميسي، الذي يبلغ ارتفاعه نحو 70 قدماً (21 متراً)، وذلك لدواع أمنية بعدما رُصد الهيكل الضخم وهو «يتأرجح بفعل الرياح».
وأكد شارادوات موخيرجي، العضو البرلماني عن ولاية البنغال الغربية، في تصريحات لوسائل إعلام بريطانية أن التمثال غير آمن من الناحية الهيكلية.
وقال: «لقد تبين أن تمثال أسطورة كرة القدم الأرجنتينية غير آمن.. لاحظنا بوضوح تأرجحه مع هبوب الرياح».
ولفت إلى أن عملية الإزالة «ليست بالسهولة التي تخيلناها» بسبب موقعه قرب طريق مزدحم ومحطة مترو، لكنه أكد أن السلطات تخطط لتفكيكه «في أقرب فرصة ممكنة» لحماية السلامة العامة.
وشُيّد التمثال في ديسمبر الماضي بالتزامن مع زيارة ميسي الترويجية إلى الهند تحت شعار «GOAT» (أعظم لاعب في التاريخ)، حيث يُظهر التمثال اللاعب رافعاً كأس العالم 2022، وكان قد كُشف النقاب عنه في منطقة بحيرة تاون بكلكتا.
وشارك ميسي في مراسم إزاحة الستار عن التمثال «افتراضياً»، وجاءت الزيارة بعد فترة وجيزة من تتويجه بلقب الدوري الأمريكي مع ناديه إنتر ميامي، برفقة زملائه لويس سواريز ورودريغو دي بول.
ولم تكن زيارة ميسي التي استمرت ثلاثة أيام خالية من المشاكل؛ إذ شابتها أحداث عنف وارتباك تنظيمي كبير، مما دفع قطاعاً واسعاً من الجماهير إلى توجيه انتقادات حادة للمنظمين.
ودفع الكثيرون مبالغ طائلة ثمن التذاكر على أمل رؤية الأسطورة عن قرب، لكنهم لم يتمكنوا من ذلك، ما جعل التمثال رمزاً لتلك الزيارة «الفوضوية» التي تنتهي الآن بإزالته.
يُذكر أن التمثال كان قد رُبط بحبال مؤقتاً لتثبيته بعد شكاوى السكان، لكن التقييمات الهندسية أكدت الحاجة إلى إزالته بشكل كامل.
The authorities in the Indian city of Kolkata have decided to remove the giant statue of Argentine legend Lionel Messi, which stands about 70 feet (21 meters) tall, for security reasons after the massive structure was observed "swaying in the wind."
Sharadwat Mukherjee, the parliamentary member for West Bengal, confirmed in statements to British media that the statue is structurally unsafe.
He said: "It has become clear that the statue of the Argentine football legend is not safe... We clearly noticed it swaying with the gusts of wind."
He pointed out that the removal process "is not as easy as we imagined" due to its location near a busy road and a metro station, but he assured that the authorities plan to dismantle it "as soon as possible" to protect public safety.
The statue was erected last December coinciding with Messi's promotional visit to India under the slogan "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time), depicting the player holding the 2022 World Cup trophy, and it was unveiled in the Town Lake area of Kolkata.
Messi participated in the unveiling ceremony of the statue "virtually," and the visit came shortly after he was crowned the American league champion with his club Inter Miami, alongside teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul.
Messi's three-day visit was not without problems; it was marred by incidents of violence and significant organizational confusion, prompting a wide segment of the public to direct sharp criticism at the organizers.
Many paid hefty amounts for tickets in hopes of seeing the legend up close, but they were unable to do so, making the statue a symbol of that "chaotic" visit, which now ends with its removal.
It is worth noting that the statue had been temporarily tied down to secure it after complaints from residents, but engineering assessments confirmed the need for its complete removal.
