لم يكن حارس مرمى الأهلي وقائده إدوارد ميندي يتوقع أن تشهد مسيرته الاحترافية تحولاً تاريخياً، إذ عانى حارس المرمى السنغالي من صعوبات جمة في بداية مسيرته مع كرة القدم، عقب أن رفض نادي شيريوغ الفرنسي تجديد عقده في موسم 2014، ليضطر للبقاء في المنزل دون الانضمام لأي نادٍ لمدة عام كامل، اضطر خلالها للتسجيل في برنامج «تعويضات البطالة» وتحدث عن تلك الفترة قائلاً: كانت زوجتي حاملاً ولم تكن تعويضات البطالة تكفي لتغطية كافة المصاريف، كنت وقتها أتدرب مع الفريق الاحتياطي لفريق لوهافر للحفاظ على لياقتي.
وفي موسم 2016 جاء التحول التاريخي في مسيرة ميندي عندما وقع عقداً مع فريق ستاد ريمس لتبدأ المسيرة التاريخية للحارس السنغالي التي شهدت منذ ذلك الوقت التنقل ما بين رين الفرنسي ومن ثم القفزة التاريخية في مسيرته بالانتقال إلى تشيلسي وتحقيق لقب دوري أبطال أوروبا 2020 ليحصل بعدها على جائزة أفضل حارس مرمى في العالم 2021، انتقل بعدها للأهلي ونجح مع الفريق في تحقيق دوري أبطال آسيا للنخبة في الموسم الماضي، وعُين قائداً للأهلي مطلع الموسم الحالي ونجح مع الأهلي في تكرار التأهل مجدداً للنهائي الآسيوي.

The goalkeeper and captain of Al Ahly, Edouard Mendy, did not expect his professional career to witness a historic transformation. The Senegalese goalkeeper faced numerous difficulties at the beginning of his football career after the French club Cherbourg refused to renew his contract in the 2014 season, forcing him to stay at home without joining any club for a whole year. During that time, he had to register for the "unemployment benefits" program and spoke about that period, saying: "My wife was pregnant, and the unemployment benefits were not enough to cover all the expenses. At that time, I was training with the reserve team of Le Havre to maintain my fitness."
In the 2016 season, the historic transformation in Mendy's career occurred when he signed a contract with Stade de Reims, marking the beginning of the Senegalese goalkeeper's historic journey, which since then has seen him move between Rennes in France and then make the historic leap in his career by transferring to Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2020 and subsequently received the award for Best Goalkeeper in the World in 2021. He then moved to Al Ahly and succeeded with the team in winning the AFC Champions League last season.
