أكمل نادي الاتحاد السعودي 21 عامًا منذ آخر تتويج له بلقب دوري أبطال آسيا، في واحدة من أطول فترات الغياب القاري في تاريخ النادي، رغم مكانته الكبيرة في الكرة الآسيوية.
وكان «العميد» قد توّج باللقب القاري مرتين متتاليتين عامي 2004 و2005، في حقبة ذهبية لا تزال عالقة في أذهان جماهيره، قبل أن يدخل بعدها في سلسلة من المشاركات التي لم تُكلل بالنجاح ذاته.
حيث تلقى الفريق خسارة أمام الفريق الياباني ماتشيدا زيلفيا، بهدف دون رد، في مواجهة لم ينجح خلالها الاتحاد في العودة والتأهل.
ورغم محاولات العودة لمنصات التتويج خلال السنوات الماضية، لم يتمكن الاتحاد من استعادة أمجاده القارية، في ظل منافسة شرسة وتغيرات فنية وإدارية متعاقبة، بعد أن كانت الجماهير تتطلع إلى كسر هذه السلسلة، واستعادة اللقب الغائب منذ أكثر من عقدين.

Al-Ittihad, known as "The Dean," won the continental title twice in a row in 2004 and 2005, during a golden era that remains etched in the memories of its fans, before entering a series of participations that did not achieve the same success.
The team suffered a loss against the Japanese team Matsumoto Yamaga, with a score of one goal to none, in a match where Al-Ittihad failed to make a comeback and qualify.
Despite attempts to return to the podium in recent years, Al-Ittihad has been unable to regain its continental glory, amid fierce competition and successive technical and administrative changes, as fans have been looking forward to breaking this streak and reclaiming the title that has been absent for over two decades.
