Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the President of the Asian Football Confederation, affirmed the Confederation's commitment to continue supporting national and regional federations, reiterating the role of football in uniting and inspiring people, during the seventh Executive Committee meeting of the Asian Football Confederation held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
The meeting took place just hours before the Asian Football Confederation Awards 2025 ceremony in Riyadh, where Sheikh Salman began the meeting by expressing his deep appreciation to the Saudi Football Federation for its outstanding hospitality.
The AFC President pointed out that the Kingdom has become a major hub for Asian football, as the Saudi Federation hosted the Asian Dream Foundation conference this week, along with several committee meetings, in addition to the conference of the presidents and secretaries of national and regional federations that will commence on Friday.
Sheikh Salman also praised the recent successes of Asian football, congratulating the national teams of Qatar and Saudi Arabia for qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, following the conclusion of the final round of the Asian qualifiers - the road to the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday.
He also commended Al Hilal Club for reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup held last July, as well as the selection of three AFC referees to officiate the final match of the global tournament.
Sheikh Salman stated: On behalf of the Executive Committee, I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Saudi Football Federation for its generous hospitality and for its continuous embodiment of the cherished values of Asian unity.
He added: Our Asian teams have continued to deliver outstanding performances on the biggest global stages, and on behalf of the AFC, we extend our warmest congratulations to all the teams that have secured their spots in next year's World Cup.
At the same time, the AFC President addressed the challenges facing several national federations, affirming the solidarity of the Asian football family with all its members.
Sheikh Salman added: Our meeting here in Riyadh embodies our unity and the progress we are making together, but it also reminds us that football does not exist in isolation from the world; it is affected by the challenges, difficulties, and victories of our communities.
He went on to say: We must stand by our members in difficult times to ensure that football remains a force for unity and resilience. I would like to express once again our full solidarity with the Palestinian Football Association and our deepest sympathy for all the victims in Gaza. While we feel relieved by the recent announcement of peace in Gaza, I want to assure the Palestinian Federation of our full support in its efforts to rebuild its football activities, protect its players and officials, and keep the spirit of the game alive despite the difficult circumstances. We also express our full support and sympathy for both the Nepal Football Association and the Philippine Football Federation in light of the challenges currently facing their countries.
He emphasized: While we celebrate our collective successes, we must also take responsibility for standing by our members in times of hardship to ensure that football remains a source of hope, resilience, and unity for all.
Outside the realm of competitions, Sheikh Salman emphasized the AFC's commitment to continue developing dedicated programs that enhance professionalism and governance in national and regional federations, benefiting from the educational initiatives and growing development programs launched in recent months.
In this context, the Executive Committee approved the "Level Playing Field" program and policy adopted by the Development Committee earlier this week, as well as the decision of the Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee to grant the Thai Football Association the rights to host the next two editions of the AFC Beach Soccer Championship.
Sheikh Salman welcomed the signing of new agreements between the AFC and UEFA in the field of coach development, which will contribute to raising standards through the exchange of experiences and mutual recognition of coaching qualifications. These agreements, valid until 2029, are the result of two years of consultations and include an operational agreement recognizing mutual qualifications and a technical agreement that establishes a framework for cooperation, knowledge exchange, and best practices.
The Executive Committee of the Asian Football Confederation also confirmed that the next edition of the AFC Football Awards 2026 will be held in Thailand.
