It is said that success comes after suffering, and the Saudi basketball team may be the proof of that. On Saturday evening, the Green team secured its place in the qualifying round for the quarter-finals of the 2025 Asian Basketball Cup after defeating India, continuing what could turn into a magical journey for the hosts.
Thus began the Asian Basketball Confederation's report on its official website about our national team star Khalid Abduljabbar. The report added: "After losing the opening match against China, Saudi Arabia achieved two consecutive victories, the first being a shocking win of 77-73 against Jordan (one of the semi-final teams in 2022) last Thursday, ending a 12-year winless streak. Then came the big victory with a score of 84-59 against India, igniting the enthusiasm of the fans who filled the stands of King Abdullah Sports City, where they will watch their team continue its journey in the final stage.
As for Khalid Abduljabbar, he expressed his great pride in the transformation he and the team are experiencing, not only in this ongoing tournament but since the previous edition three years ago. Khalid Abduljabbar expressed his happiness, saying: "A significant improvement."
Saudi Arabia was among the 16 teams that participated in the 2022 Asian Cup in Indonesia, marking their return to the tournament after nearly a decade-long absence, specifically since the 2013 edition held in the Philippines.
The 34-year-old player was part of that team, but he returned home empty-handed after losing to the hosts, then to Australia (the eventual champions for two consecutive times), and to Jordan in Group A, finishing the tournament in 14th place.
But after years, the situation has changed completely. From being just a team hoping to compete, the national team now has big ambitions to go as far as possible, starting with securing a ticket to the quarter-finals as a first step. Abduljabbar, who finished the match against India with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists, said: "We were 0-3 in the last edition in Indonesia, and now we have won two matches. It’s a great start; we just need to maintain this momentum."
Achieving that would be an accomplishment in itself, as Saudi Arabia has not reached the quarter-finals in nearly two decades, specifically since the 2005 tournament in Qatar, where they finished in eighth place in an edition won by China.
There is no doubt that this idea is exciting, but Coach Ricard Casas's players know that getting there will not be easy, as they have to overcome the strong Philippine team in a decisive knockout match. The Philippine team (Gilas) was the first to qualify for that stage after defeating Iraq 66-57 to secure third place in Group D, a victory that could reignite the motivation for a team that has 5 Asian titles, after starting the tournament with two losses against Chinese Taipei and New Zealand.
Additionally, the Philippine team enjoys significant fan support, which has been a reliable factor for the team for a long time, especially now as they approach such an important match.
Nevertheless, Khalid Abduljabbar seems extremely excited for the upcoming confrontation, stating: "The Philippines is undoubtedly a great team. They will have their fans here, and we will have ours. I believe the arena will be completely full. We are excited to compete."
However, the main reason he looks forward to this match is the desire of Abduljabbar and the rest of the Saudi players to take revenge on a team they have never been able to defeat before. The two teams have met at the FIBA tournament level three times in the past, with Gilas winning all of them, the last being a 76-63 victory in the Asian qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup in November 2022, in this very arena.
The veteran international player said: "The last time we played against them, they defeated us, so we definitely want to take our revenge. But in the end, it will certainly be a great match."
