The Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has settled the competition for the title of "Greatest Winner in the History of the Ballon d'Or," after the public chose his award-winning season in 2008 at the top of a poll launched by "France Football," ahead of his Argentine rival Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo's season with Manchester United came in first place in the "B.O.A.T." initiative, which stands for "Ballon d'Or Throughout History," while Messi's 2012 season ranked second, and Ronaldo's 2017 season came in third, according to the results announced on Wednesday.
The initiative does not grant Ronaldo a new official Ballon d'Or, nor does it change the records of the annual award, but it allows the public to choose the most prominent season among those that saw football legends awarded the prize, as part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of its launch.
The choice of the 2008 season was based on the exceptional achievements Ronaldo accomplished with Manchester United, as he scored 42 goals in various competitions during the 2007-2008 season, contributing to the team's triumph in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, and he also won the European Golden Shoe, before receiving his first Ballon d'Or at the age of twenty-three.
In contrast, Messi entered the competition with his historic 2012 season, during which he scored 91 goals with Barcelona and the Argentina national team in official matches, a record annual figure associated with one of his most prominent individual seasons, but this achievement was not enough to top the poll, which relied on public voting rather than a panel of journalists who select the winner of the official award.
Messi holds the record for the most Ballon d'Or wins, having been awarded it eight times in the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2023, while Ronaldo won the award five times in the years 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.
The list of legends participating in the poll included prominent names from different generations, including Dutchman Johan Cruyff, Frenchman Michel Platini, German Franz Beckenbauer, Brazilian Ronaldo Nazário, Dutch Marco van Basten, Argentine Alfredo Di Stéfano, Englishman Kevin Keegan, and German Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
The competition was limited to players who have won the Ballon d'Or at least twice, with each award-winning season counted as an independent entry; therefore, Ronaldo and Messi appeared multiple times in the ranking results.
This initiative differs from the official annual Ballon d'Or voting, which relies on journalists' evaluations, as "B.O.A.T." was based on public voting through "France Football" platforms. Additionally, participation in the poll was paid, with a voting cost of one euro, allowing users to vote more than once, which necessitates treating the result as an expression of participants' choices, rather than a definitive judgment on the historical superiority of the players.
The Ballon d'Or was launched in 1956 and has become one of the most prestigious individual awards in football over the decades. However, comparing the seasons of stars from different generations remains tied to multiple criteria, from goals and titles to impact in matches and the nature of competition in each era.
Thus, the "France Football" poll favored Ronaldo's season with Manchester United in 2008 over Messi's record-setting season in 2012, in a new chapter of the historical rivalry between the two stars, without undermining Messi's superiority in the number of official Ballon d'Or awards.
