The Dominican Republic announced a ban on hosting matches for the Haitian national football team in its sports facilities, following chaotic events that occurred at the "Félix Sánchez" Olympic Stadium in the capital, Santo Domingo, before the teams' match in the CONCACAF Nations League on Thursday.
Dominican Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz announced the decision on Friday, describing what happened at one of the stadium's gates as "unacceptable," and confirming that his country does not tolerate violations of rules or damage to sports facilities. President Luis Abinader expressed his support for the decision, affirming that the Sports Minister's stance represents the government's position.
The entrances to the stadium witnessed a stampede and chaos during the crowd's entry procedures, with video footage showing groups of fans entering through damaged gates. The events occurred amidst a large attendance for the match, which ended with Haiti winning 4-1.
Wilson Isidor scored two goals for Haiti, bringing his team's total to 9 points in Group A, while the Dominican Republic's score remained at 6 points.
The events coincided with another controversy after Isidor appeared in a video repeating the phrase "Hispaniola is Haiti," which sparked reactions in the Dominican Republic. The president of the Dominican Football Federation, José Deschamps, announced the federation's intention to raise the matter with FIFA and CONCACAF, while the Haitian embassy confirmed that the statements do not represent the position of the Haitian government and emphasized respect for Dominican sovereignty and good neighborliness.
