As the Women's U-17 World Cup 2025 in Morocco approaches, set to take place in two weeks, Kyrgyz referee Veronika Bernatskaya is taking center stage in the latest edition of the Asian Football Confederation's campaign "This is My Game," preparing to officiate matches as one of six Asian female referees appointed for the tournament.
Bernatskaya's relationship with football began in the traditional way, by joining her school friends for quick matches, before eventually progressing to represent the national team. Her refereeing career came about by chance when she always arrived at training early, and was asked to use her time to help manage one of the matches.
Bernatskaya said, "I always arrived early to training, and once there was a match with only one referee, who knew I was a player, he asked me to help him, so I agreed. After that match, my interest in refereeing grew, and I wanted to learn more and more about its details, so I started learning."
Fighting for Her Dream
Despite her success in carving out a remarkable historical path for herself, her beginnings were not easy. She explained that it was not easy at first, as it was difficult for her family to support her because they did not see it as suitable for women. "But I fought for my dream, and now my siblings and family are all very proud of me."
Since then, the 33-year-old Bernatskaya has not looked back, as she became the first female referee from the Kyrgyz Republic to be appointed in competitions under the supervision of the Central Asian Football Association, the Asian Football Confederation, and FIFA, officiating matches in women's tournaments as well as major men's competitions.
Motivating Girls to Shine in Refereeing
As a certified referee who has participated in many age-group tournaments under FIFA, Bernatskaya is also committed to guiding the new generation in her homeland. She says, "We don't have many female referees in Kyrgyzstan, but I try to share my experience to help the younger generation and teach them. I take them to training with me and share my journey."
At the same time, the referee praised the strong programs of the Asian Football Confederation to develop more distinguished female referees across the continent.
She added, "We now have many tournaments and seminars, both online and in person, along with outstanding fitness coaches, and greater opportunities to officiate major tournaments."
The Bigger Goal is the Women's World Cup
Her distinction as one of the most trusted referees in Asia has led her to some of the most important continental football events, including the Women's Asian Cup 2022 in India. Among her recent highlights was officiating the semi-final match of the first edition of the AFC Women's Champions League, which she described as a dream come true.
Bernatskaya concluded her remarks by saying, "Participating in the first edition of the AFC Women's Champions League was not just a big responsibility, but also a dream, and I am very proud to have been part of this story. My biggest goal is to reach the Women's World Cup in the near future."
