وبقي المنتخب الياباني في صدارة ترتيب المجموعة الأولى، بفارق ثلاث نقاط عن نيوزيلندا وتشيلي، حيث يحتاج فقط إلى تجنّب الخسارة في مباراته يوم الجمعة أمام منتخب نيوزلندا ليضمن التأهل المباشر.
وبعد نصف ساعة متكافئة من اللعب، سنحت لليابان فرصة التقدم بعد حصل رينتو تاكاوكا على ركلة جزاء، تقدّم المهاجم الياباني بنفسه لتنفيذ ضربة الجزاء، لكن الحارس سيباستيان ميلا تألق ونجح في التصدي لها.
وتحصل منتخب الياباني على ركلة جزاء ثانية بعد أن تعرض شونسوكي سايتو من لاعب تشيلي ويلي تشاتيلييز، ليترجم القائد ريون إيتشيهارا الفرصة إلى هدف بعدما سدد ضربة الجزاء بثقة في منتصف المرمى، وجاء الحسم قبل ثماني دقائق من النهاية، عندما أطلق يوميكي يوكوياما تسديدة قوية من مسافة بعيدة استقرت في الزاوية، مؤكداً انتصار اليابان.
وبهذه النتيجة يحقق اليابان فوز الثاني ويصل للنقطة السادسة، فيما تلقى تشيلي الخسارة الأولى ويتجمد رصيده عند 3 نقاط.
