وافتتح ليفربول التسجيل في الدقيقة 43، بعد أن اقتنص فيديريكو كييزا تمريرة خاطئة من الحارس ماكارثي، ليمررها إلى إيزاك والذي سدد كرة قوية معلناً عن أول أهدافه بقميص «الريدز».
وفي الدقيقة 76، تمكن تشيا تشارلز من تعديل النتيجة لصالح ساوثهامبتون، بعد تسديدة من مسافة قريبة سكنت الشباك.
وقبل خمس دقائق من نهاية الوقت الأصلي، أرسل آندي روبرتسون كرة عرضية إلى كييزا، الذي هيّأها بدوره لهوغو إيكيتيكي، ليستغل الأخير الفرصة ويسجل هدف الفوز لأصحاب الأرض في الوقت القاتل.
فرحة لم تكتمل
لكن فرحة إيكيتيكي لم تكتمل، إذ غادر الملعب مطروداً بعد تلقيه البطاقة الصفراء الثانية نتيجة خلع قميصه أثناء احتفاله بالهدف.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, after Federico Chiesa seized a misplaced pass from goalkeeper McCarthy, passing it to Isaac, who fired a powerful shot, announcing his first goal in the "Reds" jersey.
In the 76th minute, Ché Adams managed to equalize for Southampton with a close-range shot that found the net.
Five minutes before the end of regular time, Andy Robertson sent a cross to Chiesa, who set it up for Hugo Ekitike, allowing the latter to seize the opportunity and score the winning goal for the home side in the dying moments.
Joy That Wasn't Complete
However, Ekitike's joy was short-lived, as he left the field sent off after receiving a second yellow card for taking off his shirt while celebrating the goal.
