The Swedish striker Alexander Isak made his debut with Liverpool after his record transfer from Newcastle for £125 million, in his team's thrilling victory over Spanish Atletico Madrid with a score of three goals to two in the first round of the 2025-2026 UEFA Champions League at Anfield.
Isak started the match under the watchful eyes of the "Kop" fans and played for 58 minutes before making way for the French newcomer Hugo Ekitike. During his first appearance, the promising striker showcased glimpses of his attacking value, as he touched the ball 25 times and had a passing accuracy of 81% (13 out of 16), in addition to creating a clear chance that raised his expected contributions to goals (xA) to 0.53. He also took two shots on goal, one of which was on target, engaged in several duels winning three of them, and succeeded in two defensive interventions that helped the team. Isak received a rating of 6.8 out of 10 for his performance in the match.
Although he has yet to leave his scoring mark, his debut reflected the reason Liverpool bet on signing him as the most expensive player in English history, as he combined physical strength, smart movements, and the ability to create space for his teammates.
Coach Arne Slot confirmed after the match that Isak "does not need to prove himself in England after showing his quality at Newcastle," noting that the player will gradually reach his full readiness as matches continue.
While the match featured exciting events with early goals from Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson, and Marcus Llorente equalizing twice for Atletico, before Virgil van Dijk secured the victory with a last-minute header, the spotlight remained largely on the Swedish newcomer’s debut, who is expected to be one of the key attacking assets for the Reds in their European campaign this season.
