American Taylor Fritz, the fifth seed in the tournament, reached the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon tennis championship for the third time in his career after his Australian opponent Jordan Thompson withdrew during their fourth-round match today (Sunday) due to a thigh injury.
Thompson entered the competition suffering from back pain, and his problem worsened in the middle of the second set, prompting him to request a medical timeout after clearly struggling with an injury to his right thigh. After resuming play for just a few points, he decided to withdraw while trailing 1-6 and 0-3.
Fritz, who faced no real resistance, easily secured the first set thanks to his strong performance and decisive serves, especially with the rain falling on Court No. 1, which hosted the match. The American player took advantage of the fatigue that was clearly evident in Thompson, who had played exhausting matches that extended to five sets in the first two rounds and four sets in the third round.
With this victory, Fritz continues his steady progress in the tournament held on the grass courts of the All England Club, aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time in his history.
