غيّب الموت أمس (السبت) مايك مكالوم، أحد أبرز أبطال الملاكمة وأكثرهم إثارة في ثمانينيات وتسعينيات القرن الماضي، بشكل مفاجئ في لاس فيغاس.
الملاكم مكالوم الذي فاز بألقاب عالمية في ثلاث فئات للوزن وأصبح مدربًا ناجحًا بعد تقاعده، كان يقود سيارته إلى صالة الألعاب الرياضية في لاس فيغاس، ويبدو أنه تعرض لوعكة صحية مفاجئة وانحرفت سيارته عن الطريق، وفقًا لصحيفة «جامايكا أوبزرفر»، ليتم لاحقًا العثور عليه فاقدًا للوعي، ثم أُعلنت وفاته عن عمر يناهز 68 عامًا، ولم يُكشف عن سبب وفاته الرسمي بعد.
وتواصلت مجلة «بيبول» اليوم الأحد مع إدارة شرطة مدينة لاس فيغاس (LVMPD) للتعليق لكنها لم تتلقَّ ردًا فوريًا.
وأكدت وزيرة الرياضة في جامايكا أوليفيا جرانج، وفاة مكالوم في بيان، وقالت: «ببالغ الحزن والأسى، تلقيت نبأ وفاة بطل العالم الجامايكي في الملاكمة ثلاث مرات، مايكل ماكنزي مكالوم، أتقدم بأحر التعازي لوالدته وإخوته وأبناءه، وبالنيابة عن وزارة الرياضة، أغتنم هذه الفرصة لأعرب عن تعازينا لعائلة وأصدقاء هذا الملاكم الجامايكي الأسطوري».
كان ماكالوم - الملقب بـ«خاطف الأجساد» لضرباته القوية - أول ملاكم جامايكي يفوز بلقب العالم عام 1984 عندما هزم شون مانيون من أيرلندا في ماديسون سكوير غاردن بمدينة نيويورك.
وفاز بألقاب عالمية في ثلاث فئات وزن مختلفة، وشملت مسيرته 55 نزالًا، فاز منها بـ 49 وخسر خمس وتعادل في نزال واحد، وفقًا لمجلة «ملاكمة بلا هزيمة».
ومن بين انتصاراته الـ 49 كانت 36 منها بـ«الضربة القاضية». وأُدخل ماكالوم إلى قاعة مشاهير الملاكمة الدولية عام 2003.
واعتزل ماكالوم بعد أن تغلب عليه منافسه جيمس توني بقرار إجماعي في نزالهما الثالث، الذي جرى في فبراير 1997. وكان توني قد هزم ماكالوم سابقًا بقرار الأغلبية في أغسطس 1992، وتعادل معه في ديسمبر 1991.
ثلاث من خسائر ماكالوم الخمس جاءت ضد توني وروي جونز جونيور، وهما مقاتلان من قاعة المشاهير. وكثيرًا ما يصف توني، ماكالوم بأنه أفضل خصم واجهه خلال مسيرته الحافلة.
بعد اعتزاله، حظي ماكالوم بإشادة لعمله كمدرب في صالات الألعاب الرياضية في جميع أنحاء لاس فيغاس. وكان يعمل غالبًا إلى جانب صديقه، البطل السابق إيدي مصطفى محمد.
The death of Mike McCallum, one of the most prominent and exciting boxing champions of the 1980s and 1990s, occurred unexpectedly yesterday (Saturday) in Las Vegas.
The boxer McCallum, who won world titles in three weight classes and became a successful trainer after his retirement, was driving to the gym in Las Vegas when he apparently suffered a sudden health issue, causing his car to veer off the road, according to the Jamaica Observer. He was later found unconscious and was pronounced dead at the age of 68, with the official cause of death not yet disclosed.
People magazine reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) for comment on Sunday but did not receive an immediate response.
Jamaica's Minister of Sport, Olivia Grange, confirmed McCallum's death in a statement, saying: "With great sadness and sorrow, I received the news of the passing of three-time world champion Jamaican boxer, Michael McKenzie McCallum. I extend my deepest condolences to his mother, siblings, and children, and on behalf of the Ministry of Sport, I take this opportunity to express our condolences to the family and friends of this legendary Jamaican boxer."
McCallum—nicknamed "The Body Snatcher" for his powerful punches—was the first Jamaican boxer to win a world title in 1984 when he defeated Sean Mannion from Ireland at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
He won world titles in three different weight classes, and his career included 55 fights, of which he won 49, lost five, and had one draw, according to the magazine "Boxing Without Borders."
Of his 49 victories, 36 were by "knockout." McCallum was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.
McCallum retired after being defeated by his rival James Toney by unanimous decision in their third fight, which took place in February 1997. Toney had previously defeated McCallum by majority decision in August 1992 and had drawn with him in December 1991.
Three of McCallum's five losses came against Toney and Roy Jones Jr., both of whom are Hall of Fame fighters. Toney often describes McCallum as the best opponent he faced during his illustrious career.
After retiring, McCallum received praise for his work as a trainer in gyms throughout Las Vegas. He often worked alongside his friend, former champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
