Nigerian authorities have opened an investigation into a gas pipeline explosion in Rivers State in the south of the country, which resulted in 20 injuries and damage to more than 50 homes and shops, amid accusations of ignoring previous warnings about a potential leak.
The Rivers State government announced that the ministries of environment and energy and natural resources inspected the explosion site to assess the extent of the damage and communicate with the affected residents, while local community representatives demanded accountability from officials and an investigation into how previous reports regarding the leak were handled.
The explosion occurred along Old Bori Road in the Aletu area of the Ilmi community, within the oil and gas-rich Niger Delta region. The incident raised concerns among residents about safety measures and the response to warnings related to energy infrastructure.
According to the Nigerian newspaper "Premium Times," footage from the scene showed brownish materials rising into the sky, while people nearby hurried to move away, while others gathered at a distance to observe what was happening.
Witnesses reported that the pipeline had been experiencing a gas leak for about three weeks prior to the explosion, claims that residents have called for an investigation into. Daniel Chuma, the chairman of the legislative council for the Ilmi area, stated that he had contacted the relevant company and submitted petitions to the authorities regarding the reported leak, demanding urgent intervention.
Survivors and those affected have called for compensation for the losses incurred to their homes and shops, urging an assessment of whether previous reports received an appropriate response, and whether actions could have been taken to prevent the incident.
For its part, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation stated that it has isolated the affected section of the pipeline and is working in coordination with the Nigerian oil sector regulatory authority for intermediate and subsequent operations, as well as security agencies and other concerned parties to assess the damage.
The company added that it will review the relevant operational records, including previous reports and the actions taken regarding them, to determine the circumstances of the explosion and the necessary corrective measures, but it confirmed that the assessment of the causes of the incident and the extent of its repercussions is still ongoing, urging residents to stay away from the affected area and to adhere to the instructions of emergency teams.
Rivers State is located in the Niger Delta, one of Nigeria's prominent oil and gas production areas, which has often been the largest oil producer in Africa. The region faces challenges related to the safety of pipelines and oil facilities, as well as complaints from local communities about environmental damage and risks threatening residents and their livelihoods.
