U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that a threat related to Iran was behind the decision of the United States to withdraw its strategic bombers from the RAF Fairford airbase, in a move that comes amid rising security concerns about targeting American interests and forces in Britain.
Trump stated that Washington received information about a threat, which prompted it to relocate the bombers from the British base instead of keeping them in a position where they could be at risk.
The U.S. president explained to reporters that moving the aircraft does not represent a significant cost compared to the potential risks, adding that the United States knows the identities of the individuals behind the threat.
When asked whether the individuals who issued the threat were linked to Iran, Trump replied that they are "connected to Iran".
Vance: The relocation of bombers is a precautionary measure
For his part, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the relocation of the bombers was driven by extreme caution, amid Washington's belief that Iran may attempt to carry out what he described as terrorist activities against the United States and its interests.
Vance confirmed that the U.S. administration is handling potential threats with the utmost caution, without disclosing additional details regarding the nature of the security information that led to the relocation of the aircraft.
However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided a more cautious account, affirming that there is no direct link between the relocation of the bombers and the suspected plot associated with Iran.
Rubio stated that the U.S. Department of Defense continuously reallocates its military resources according to needs and security conditions.
In this context, a military source in NATO reported that Iran is still considered a significant threat to American assets and interests located in Britain.
Iran denies any involvement
Iran categorically denies the accusations of its involvement in any plot to target the British base.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on the platform "X" that the accusations against Tehran regarding the plot are unfounded, criticizing what he described as the release of individuals suspected of being terrorists working for foreign countries, and asserting that the accusations directed at Iran are going in the "wrong direction".
British authorities had arrested five British men in their twenties near the RAF Fairford base on September 27, on suspicion of involvement in activities related to explosives law.
The arrests came after the men were seen fleeing towards nearby fields from three white trucks that were parked near the base. The police stated that they did not find explosive devices, but seized a quantity of gasoline.
The five men were later released on bail, as was a sixth man holding both British and Iranian nationalities, who was arrested four days later on suspicion of preparing for terrorist acts.
RAF Fairford: A pivotal base for U.S. bombers
RAF Fairford, located about 145 kilometers west of London, is one of the most important U.S. military facilities in Europe, as it is one of the few bases capable of hosting heavy B-1 bombers.
The base has played an important role in several previous U.S. military operations in the Middle East, although American bombers are not permanently stationed there.
During the current conflict, Britain has allowed the United States to use the base to carry out defensive strikes against Iranian missile sites that were targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz, while London has refused to allow the use of its bases for offensive strikes against Iran.
This position has increased pressure on U.S.-British relations, even though Britain is traditionally one of Washington's closest allies.
Bombers return to the United States
A U.S. Department of Defense official confirmed on Sunday that all bombers that were deployed at RAF Fairford have left for their bases within the United States.
The Pentagon emphasized that the U.S. bomber force remains ready to carry out precise long-range strikes "anywhere and at any time".
Reports indicated that the United States rushed over the weekend to relocate the bombers after military leaders received new warnings about an Iran-backed plot, noting that some aircraft left the base at a time when refueling planes were still being prepared for movement.
Alternative military options
Analysts believe that the return of the bombers to the United States may, in the short term, reduce the U.S. military's ability to quickly increase its air sorties against Iran.
Trump speaks of a plot to cause "significant damage"
Trump had mentioned, following the initial arrests near the base, that there was a plot aimed at causing "significant damage," indicating at the time a possible connection to Iran.
Later, the U.S. president expressed his objection to the decision to release the suspects on bail, stating that he would not have agreed to their release in that manner.
In contrast, a senior military official in NATO confirmed that the relocation of U.S. bombers would not affect the alliance's ability to defend its members, stressing that its capacity to deal with any aggression remains intact due to the unity of member countries and their strength and the shared military capabilities of the 32 nations.
