Israeli preliminary investigation results revealed that the incident involving the "Fly Dubai" aircraft was likely carried out by a lone individual. Sources familiar with the investigation told CBS News that the alleged hijacking attempt of the Emirati aircraft, which was carrying Israeli passengers to Tel Aviv last Wednesday, was most likely a solitary act.
The investigation is still ongoing on a wide scale, with all hypotheses and possibilities being examined.
The Pilot was Stabbed
The flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv last Wednesday morning was approaching Israeli airspace when the co-pilot, Hamam Al-Hamami, stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the plane, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, some passengers on board, and the captain himself, Smit Machar.
However, Machar managed to resist his assistant long enough to open the cockpit door, allowing a group of passengers and Fly Dubai staff to subdue the attacker.
Meanwhile, two pilots who were on board the flight were able to regain control of the aircraft and execute an emergency landing in Tabuk.
The co-pilot is currently undergoing a second round of questioning in the UAE, after Saudi authorities initially interrogated him following the emergency landing of the aircraft. Israel has sent representatives to the UAE to participate in the investigation.
The Attacker Had Suicidal Tendencies
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in an interview with Fox News last Thursday that Israel knows the co-pilot "had undergone indoctrination and radicalization, based on personal information gathered during ongoing interrogations."
However, he did not provide further details, but added that the attacker was "inclined towards suicide," and that after being subdued by the crew and passengers, he was shouting: "Kill me, kill me!".
It is noted that Al-Hamami, who is 29 years old and born to an Omani father and a Syrian mother, worked briefly for Oman Air, where he joined a training program for new pilots. However, during monitoring by the Omani government, it was found that he was visiting extremist websites, which led the company to transfer him to an office job. Al-Hamami resigned from his position at Oman Air and left the company around 2024.
He then applied for a pilot position at Western Airlines but was not accepted. He later joined Fly Dubai.
