قال رئيس الوزراء البريطاني آندي برنهام، اليوم (الأربعاء)، إن بلاده ينبغي أن تبحث خيارات مختلفة بشأن علاقتها المستقبلية مع الاتحاد الأوروبي، بما في ذلك احتمال العودة إلى عضوية التكتل في نهاية المطاف، في إطار مساعيه لتعزيز العلاقات بين بريطانيا وأوروبا.
وجاءت تصريحات برنهام بعد كلمة ألقاها أمام المؤتمر السنوي لحزب العمال، قال خلالها إن خروج بريطانيا من الاتحاد الأوروبي، المعروف باسم «بريكست»، ألحق بالبلاد «ضرراً أكبر من الفائدة».
وفي مقابلة مع هيئة الإذاعة البريطانية «بي بي سي»، أوضح برنهام أن بريطانيا ينبغي أن تدرس نماذج مختلفة لعلاقتها طويلة الأمد مع الاتحاد الأوروبي، ثم تقارن بينها على أساس ما يمكن تنفيذه والمزايا والعيوب المرتبطة بكل خيار.
وقال برنهام إن أحد الخيارات يتمثل في الإبقاء على العلاقة الحالية مع الاتحاد الأوروبي، إذا رأى البريطانيون أن هذا هو المسار المناسب.
وأضاف أن هناك خيارات أخرى يمكن بحثها، من بينها الاقتراح الذي طرحه وزير المالية المحافظ السابق جورج أوزبورن بشأن إقامة اتحاد جمركي مع الاتحاد الأوروبي، أو المقترح الذي طرحه الحزب الديمقراطي الليبرالي بشأن إعادة بريطانيا إلى السوق الأوروبية الموحدة، وصولاً إلى خيار العودة الكاملة إلى الاتحاد الأوروبي.
مراجعة مستقبل العلاقة مع أوروبا
وأشار برنهام إلى أن الخيارات المطروحة يجب أن تخضع لتقييم واقعي يأخذ في الاعتبار ما يمكن تنفيذه فعلياً، إلى جانب مزايا وعيوب كل مسار.
وكان برنهام قد أعلن في وقت سابق أنه يعتزم استغلال القمة البريطانية-الأوروبية المقررة في نوفمبر لطرح خيارات بشأن مستقبل العلاقة طويلة الأمد بين المملكة المتحدة والاتحاد الأوروبي.
وتأتي هذه الدعوات في ظل استمرار النقاش السياسي والاقتصادي في بريطانيا بشأن تداعيات خروج البلاد من التكتل الأوروبي.
بريكست ألحق ضرراً أكبر من الفائدة
وصوّت البريطانيون في استفتاء عام 2016 لصالح مغادرة الاتحاد الأوروبي، منهين بذلك أكثر من أربعة عقود من عضوية بريطانيا في التكتل، قبل أن تدخل البلاد في سنوات من الاضطرابات السياسية والمفاوضات بشأن ترتيبات الانفصال والعلاقات المستقبلية مع أوروبا.
وقال برنهام، في تصريح سابق، إنه يرغب في أن تعود بريطانيا إلى الاتحاد الأوروبي خلال حياته، محذراً من أن البلاد لا تستطيع تحمل عقد آخر من عدم اليقين المرتبط بهذه القضية.
وأكد في تصريحاته الأخيرة موقفه قائلاً إن «بريكست تسبب في ضرر أكبر من الفائدة»، مضيفاً أن السؤال المطروح الآن هو كيفية التعامل مع نتائج الخروج من الاتحاد الأوروبي وتحديد المسار الذي ينبغي لبريطانيا اتباعه مستقبلاً.
وتعكس تصريحات برنهام دعوة إلى إعادة تقييم العلاقة البريطانية-الأوروبية، بدءاً من الإبقاء على الترتيبات الحالية، مروراً بخيارات مثل الاتحاد الجمركي والسوق الموحدة، وصولاً إلى احتمال استعادة عضوية بريطانيا الكاملة في الاتحاد الأوروبي.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said today (Wednesday) that his country should explore different options regarding its future relationship with the European Union, including the possibility of eventually returning to membership in the bloc, as part of his efforts to strengthen relations between Britain and Europe.
Burnham's remarks came after a speech he delivered at the annual Labour Party conference, during which he stated that Britain's exit from the European Union, known as "Brexit," has caused the country "more harm than good."
In an interview with the BBC, Burnham clarified that Britain should consider different models for its long-term relationship with the European Union and then compare them based on what can be realistically implemented and the advantages and disadvantages associated with each option.
Burnham said one option is to maintain the current relationship with the European Union if the British people see this as the right path.
He added that there are other options that can be explored, including the proposal made by former Conservative Chancellor George Osborne regarding establishing a customs union with the European Union, or the proposal put forward by the Liberal Democrats about returning Britain to the single European market, up to the option of full return to the European Union.
Reviewing the Future Relationship with Europe
Burnham pointed out that the options presented should undergo a realistic assessment that takes into account what can actually be implemented, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each path.
Burnham had previously announced that he intends to use the upcoming UK-EU summit scheduled for November to propose options regarding the long-term future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union.
These calls come amid ongoing political and economic discussions in Britain regarding the implications of the country's exit from the European bloc.
Brexit Caused More Harm than Good
Britons voted in a 2016 referendum in favor of leaving the European Union, thus ending more than four decades of Britain's membership in the bloc, before the country entered years of political turmoil and negotiations regarding the separation arrangements and future relations with Europe.
Burnham stated in a previous comment that he wishes for Britain to return to the European Union during his lifetime, warning that the country cannot afford another decade of uncertainty related to this issue.
In his recent statements, he reaffirmed his position by saying that "Brexit has caused more harm than good," adding that the question now is how to deal with the consequences of leaving the European Union and determining the path that Britain should follow in the future.
Burnham's remarks reflect a call to reassess the British-European relationship, starting from maintaining the current arrangements, through options such as the customs union and the single market, up to the possibility of restoring Britain's full membership in the European Union.
