The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, confirmed today (Tuesday) that the stability of Syria is "an integral part of Europe's security," emphasizing during a visit to Damascus the importance of a successful transitional phase, while Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani called for the lifting of the remaining European sanctions imposed on his country.
Borrell stated during a joint press conference with al-Shaybani in Damascus that the success of the transition process in Syria is not only important to the Syrians but also represents a priority for the European Union, confirming Brussels' readiness to provide support and assistance, mobilize further investments, and strengthen partnerships with Damascus.
He added that a successful transition requires accountability and reconciliation, with the European Union prepared to support Syrian institutions.
For his part, al-Shaybani called for the lifting of the remaining European sanctions, affirming that Damascus is working to expand its economic and diplomatic openness, and that it hopes the partnership with the European Union will reflect on reconstruction and addressing the effects of the war. He announced that Syria will work to elevate its diplomatic representation to the European Union in Brussels, while Syrian technical committees continue to coordinate with the European side.
Borrell emphasized the importance of supporting the Syrian banking infrastructure, considering it a factor in revitalizing the economy and attracting investments, and revealed the mobilization of 51 million euros to assist in clearing mines and war remnants.
Regarding the Sweida issue, the European official confirmed the EU's support for dialogue to address tensions and consolidate stability.
The European Union had decided in May 2025 to lift economic sanctions on Syria, following the suspension of several measures in February of the same year, while maintaining restrictions related to security and human rights considerations, which explains Damascus's call to lift "what remains" of the sanctions. The European Union confirms that the easing of sanctions aims to support the Syrian people, the transition process, and reconstruction.
