The European Union has renewed its stance calling for continued pressure on Iran, alongside pushing for a diplomatic path to end the ongoing conflict since last February, and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to navigation, while defense ministers of EU countries plan to discuss the crises in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb and enhance European naval capabilities in the Red Sea.
A senior European diplomat confirmed today (Friday) that the EU defense ministers will hold a meeting next (Monday) to discuss the implications of the strait crises, explaining during a press briefing that the Union "is monitoring the limited military options in dealing with Iran."
The diplomat, who requested anonymity, stated that Europeans are encouraging the diplomatic option while using means to pressure Tehran to end the conflict, noting that the crises in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb are at the forefront of the Union leaders' concerns.
He explained that the meeting will also discuss enhancing the capabilities of the "Aspide" fleet in the Red Sea, saying that "the time is right" to strengthen its capabilities, given the ongoing threats facing navigation in the region.
Since the outbreak of the war on February 28, navigation in the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted due to Iranian threats, while American forces have imposed a maritime blockade on Iranian ports, preventing the exit of oil or the entry of other ships, according to the report.
Simultaneously, Washington has begun implementing what it calls "economic wrath," in an attempt to "suffocate" the Iranian economy and punish any party or country that deals with Tehran.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a bargaining chip amid the ongoing escalation and exchange of threats between the American and Iranian sides, despite recent attempts in the past days to reach a temporary consensus, according to a plan presented by Iran, as announced by its Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi yesterday.
