In a scene reflecting the importance of the summit between the two largest economies in the world, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the White House today (Thursday), amid extensive official and military ceremonies, with trade, artificial intelligence, and security topping the agenda of the bilateral talks, alongside issues related to Iran and Taiwan.
During the reception ceremony, Trump stated that the United States is "proud" of its relations with China, praising the relationship he has with the Chinese president and affirming that the two countries share a good trade relationship despite their competition. He emphasized that the discussions would address urgent issues related to security, technology, and "superintelligence," considering that the decisions made by the two countries in these areas could enhance peace and prosperity in the coming decades.
The reception ceremony featured the participation of 479 members from various branches of the U.S. armed forces, alongside a display of American and Chinese flags and the playing of both national anthems. The program also included a military parade in the Rose Garden, with the participation of the U.S. Army's drum and bugle corps and the silent drill team of the Marine Corps, before concluding with the flyover of a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptor fighters, according to the White House program.
The exceptional reception was not limited to the White House, as Trump personally went to Andrews Air Force Base yesterday (Wednesday) to welcome Xi, a rare step when receiving a foreign leader, where military ceremonies included a red carpet, a honor guard, the playing of both national anthems, and the flyover of military aircraft. The Associated Press described the reception as rare, while the visit is considered Xi's first state visit to Washington in over a decade.
For his part, Xi confirmed that his visit aims to strengthen friendship and cooperation, stressing that China and the United States bear a "historic responsibility" in promoting human progress. He called for avoiding conflicts and enhancing communication between the two countries, including the continuation of dialogue between their militaries, affirming Beijing's readiness to work with Washington to guide the course of relations and enhance trade cooperation.
Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of the talks agenda, as Trump stated before the reception ceremony that "superintelligence" would be a key topic of discussion. Xi also emphasized the importance of developing artificial intelligence within the framework of human oversight, at a time when Washington and Beijing are dealing with advanced technology as one of the most prominent areas of strategic competition between them. The summit will also address issues of security, Iran, and Taiwan, alongside the future of trade relations.
On the economic front, the summit received a preliminary boost with the announcement of an extension of the trade truce between Washington and Beijing until January 10, 2027, after it was scheduled to end in November, giving both parties additional time to continue negotiations on outstanding trade issues.
The summit comes amid efforts by both sides to maintain stability in their relationship despite ongoing competition in technology, trade, and security, while observers believe that the issues of Taiwan, artificial intelligence, trade, and relations with Iran will keep strategic disagreements present on the leaders' agenda.
Xi's visit is set to continue tomorrow (Friday) with a private tea meeting with Trump and his wife Melania at the White House, before the Chinese president and his wife Peng Liyuan head to the National Archives in Washington to conclude the visit.
