The Lebanese army intelligence thwarted a terrorist plot targeting Pope Leo XIV, after arresting a Syrian individual belonging to ISIS in the Batroun area of northern Lebanon, following a surveillance and security monitoring operation that lasted since his illegal entry into Lebanese territory.
According to exclusive information reported by "Al Arabiya.net/Al Hadath," investigations with the arrested individual revealed his continuous communication with the leadership of a group affiliated with ISIS in Syria, which tasked him with carrying out missions inside Lebanon aimed at destabilizing security and instilling fear among the Lebanese people.
The sources indicated that the most significant mission he was assigned was to assassinate Pope Leo XIV during his visit to Lebanon in November and December of last year; however, the arrested individual was unable to move to the execution phase due to lacking the necessary resources to carry out the plan.
The sources clarified that the arrested individual held a responsibility within the organization and remained in contact with its members and leaders in Syria, while the army intelligence continued to track his movements since his entry into Lebanon, until they were able to pinpoint his location and arrest him in Batroun.
According to the sources, the Lebanese security agencies intend to communicate with their Syrian counterparts to exchange information provided by the arrested individual regarding his communications with the leadership and members of the organization, as part of the security cooperation and coordination between the two countries.
It is expected that, after completing the investigations, the case file of the arrested individual will be referred to the competent judiciary, in preparation for charging him with crimes of belonging to an armed terrorist organization, planning terrorist acts, and attempting to kill a religious and international figure.
Pope Leo XIV visited Lebanon between November 30 and December 2, 2025, in his first foreign trip since his election, and the visit witnessed a large gathering of Lebanese people along the routes taken by his convoy.
