When a woman is subjected to harmful treatment or abuse from others, her reactions may seem varied, but a recent scientific study highlights a thin thread that may reveal underlying traits of hostile narcissism.
Contrary to what some believe that revenge is the most prominent expression of these personalities, research indicates that a sharp and rapid tendency towards complete withdrawal and avoidance of the abuser reflects an automatic connection to narcissistic patterns centered on entitlement and distrust.
The researchers in this study relied on a sample of 102 women who underwent precise psychological questionnaires and computerized tests of quick thinking and reactions, aimed at monitoring the automatic associations that are difficult to consciously control.
While participants who recorded higher levels of hostile narcissistic traits showed a clear inclination towards severance and a lack of desire to demonstrate goodwill or forgive the other party, they did not exhibit an additional tendency towards revenge.
Experts explain this behavior by stating that fleeing and avoidance constitute a rapid instinctive response, whereas revenge typically requires deeper planning and mental effort.
However, researchers emphasize that distancing itself is not conclusive evidence of narcissism, as it may often represent a natural protective shield to safeguard oneself from trauma and feelings of anger, amidst calls to expand the scope of future studies to include a broader range of genders and different environments.
