Two crew members of a tanker were injured today (Monday) with minor wounds after the vessel was hit by a projectile while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, in a new incident that reflects the escalating risks facing navigation in the strategic waterway.
The British Maritime Trade Operations agency stated today that the tanker was targeted while crossing the strait, resulting in injuries to two of its crew members, clarifying that their injuries were minor and that the ship resumed its journey towards the next port of call.
The agency confirmed that there have been no reports of environmental impacts resulting from the incident so far, noting that authorities have opened an investigation into the matter and urged vessels to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity during transit.
The incident coincides with a sharp decline in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran and a stalemate that hinders efforts to reach a settlement.
Shipping data showed that commercial vessel traffic through the strait significantly decreased over the weekend, with 17 ships carrying goods crossing, compared to 37 ships in the previous weekend, according to data reported by Reuters.
Data indicated that some ships may not appear in tracking records after turning off their Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders.
In a parallel diplomatic move, Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi left today for Tehran to hold talks with Iranian officials regarding regional developments, mediation efforts, and reviving stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian is expected to head to New York tomorrow (Tuesday) to participate in the United Nations General Assembly meetings, at a time when Tehran confirmed its openness to a diplomatic path with the United States, while maintaining its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he is limiting his options with Iran to either wiping it out, letting it rot economically, or reaching a deal, while also confirming his openness to meeting the Iranian president on the sidelines of the United Nations meetings.
