The British Maritime Trade Operations Authority announced today (Friday) that a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in a fire that was later extinguished.
The authority confirmed that it received a responsible report regarding the tanker being attacked by an unknown projectile, which led to a fire on board; however, reports indicate that all crew members are safe, and it has not yet been confirmed that there is any environmental damage from the incident.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported today, citing data, that 4 cargo ships transited the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, down from 6 ships the previous day, and below the 10-day average of about 16 ships. Data from the ship tracking company "Kpler" showed that three ships entered the strait towards the Gulf, while one left, indicating that the vessels included two Panamax tankers, one Supramax, and one Kamsarmax ship.
Before the outbreak of the Iran War, one-fifth of the total global oil and gas shipments passed through the strait. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard admitted yesterday to targeting a Togolese-flagged oil tanker, claiming it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported that the naval forces of the Revolutionary Guard stated that the oil tanker "Trend" stopped after a fire broke out on board, threatening to destroy ships in Hormuz.
On another note, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said today that he would not deploy military assets in the Middle East that could drag his country into a conflict related to the Iran War, explaining that the government is considering the possibility of expanding its role in protecting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters.
