Russia and China today (Thursday) thwarted a U.S. draft resolution aimed at extending the mandate of the panel of experts on sanctions imposed on Iran, after using their veto power in the United Nations Security Council.
The United States prepared the draft resolution, while consultations regarding it revealed ongoing disagreements over activating a mechanism called "snapback" to reimpose United Nations sanctions that were suspended by the Iranian nuclear deal and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 issued in 2015.
China and Russia reject the legality and procedures for activating this mechanism, arguing that Resolution 2231 and the associated restrictions expired on October 18, 2025. Since the team was restructured, the International Atomic Energy Agency has remained the main independent source for reports related to the Iranian nuclear program.
Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced today that the U.S. military has redirected 104 commercial vessels since the reimposition of the blockade on Iran last July, up until September 17, clarifying that measures are in place to ensure strict compliance with the sanctions imposed on Iran.
The United States reinstated the blockade on Iranian ports and imposed restrictions on the movement of its ships on July 13 after the collapse of an agreement to halt the war between them, in an effort to deprive Tehran of oil sales, which represent the main source of hard currency for the country.
