The Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif confirmed today (Thursday) that it is time to implement the Mecca Agreement in light of the recent Houthi attacks towards the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Asif stated to the local Geo channel: Islamabad is committed to the mutual defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, explaining that working with Saudi Arabia is a moral and doctrinal duty that Pakistan adheres to even in the absence of any formal agreement, and it is not contingent upon the existence of the Mecca Agreement.
He pointed out that Pakistan conveyed a Saudi message to Iran, indicating that Pakistan will continue its efforts to prevent the extension of the conflict to other fronts. For his part, the spokesperson for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, Sajjad Haider Khan, said in a press briefing today that Pakistan is committed in principle and spirit to implementing the mutual strategic defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, and the Mecca Agreement for mutual defense between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, reiterating Pakistan's steadfast support for the Kingdom in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and protecting the Two Holy Mosques.
Regarding whether a mechanism has been established to counter the recent attacks launched by the Houthis on Saudi Arabia, the spokesperson confirmed that Pakistan is committed to implementing the two agreements, and renewed Pakistan's strongest condemnation of the Houthi attempt to attack the holy capital Mecca with a drone, describing it as a heinous act that hurt the feelings of Muslims around the world.
Ambassador Sajjad Haider Khan mentioned that the situation in the Bab el-Mandeb is a serious concern, indicating that Pakistan is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East. He noted that the partnership between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey in the fields of security and defense is widely appreciated, explaining that the "Mecca Agreement" has formalized and enhanced many aspects of the existing cooperation and the solid bilateral relations among these three countries. He added: "The agreement is exclusively for defensive purposes, and it is not directed against any country, nor does it officially constitute a new bloc."
