The Lebanese President Joseph Aoun confirmed today (Thursday) that Lebanon is experiencing a devastating war, with its people paying a heavy price as more than four thousand have been killed, including 399 women and 261 children, while its land, cities, and villages are subjected to systematic destruction, warning of the repercussions of Lebanon's fall that will not remain within its borders.
Aoun said during the preparatory meeting for the international conference to support the army and internal security forces in Paris: In Lebanon, medical and relief teams, journalists, state institutions, and places of worship have not been spared from Israeli attacks, clarifying that the assaults have targeted United Nations peacekeeping forces in a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.
Aoun expressed his gratitude to King Abdullah II of Jordan for the initiative and the role he plays through the Aqaba process in bringing partners together and enhancing coordination in support of Lebanon's security, stability, and legitimate institutions. He also thanked French President Emmanuel Macron and the Republic of France for hosting this meeting and for their constant support for Lebanon.
He pointed out that there is a clear will to rebuild the state and restore the role of its institutions, and to proceed with the reforms that Lebanon needs, a path that the state is committed to in all its components.
He noted that the region is witnessing profound transformations that could provide, if handled well, an opportunity to build a reality different from what we have known over the past decades.
Aoun said: Our goal is not to manage a new crisis, but to seize this moment to place Lebanon on a different path, based on a strong state and effective institutions.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun held a meeting today with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to discuss developments in Lebanon and the future of the international presence in the south of the country after the expiration of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as well as support for the army and internal security forces and the reconstruction file.
According to the French presidency, the two presidents discussed the situation in Lebanon in light of recent developments and the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese villages and towns, in addition to efforts to stop them within the framework of Lebanese-American-Israeli negotiations and the "framework agreement" signed during that time.
Aoun appreciated the initiative launched by Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni regarding this phase, and Paris's role in pushing towards sending a civilian-military mission to Lebanon as part of a common security and defense policy.
The meeting addressed the progress made in shaping proposals within the Security Council regarding the future of the international presence in southern Lebanon, in line with the diplomatic path and to prevent a vacuum after the expiration of UNIFIL's mandate.
Aoun emphasized the importance of organizing a conference for the reconstruction of Lebanon, which Macron had called for in conjunction with the conference to support the army and internal security forces.
