All eyes are on New York next week, where U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet with leaders or foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to discuss developments in the war with Iran and the United States' plans for the post-war phase, at a time when negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain stalled.
The Axios website reported that the anticipated meeting will include leaders or foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, and is expected to focus on Washington's strategy for the "day after" the war, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings.
This American move comes as the war with Iran enters its seventh month, with no clear indications of its nearing end, despite Trump's announcement yesterday (Wednesday) that he hopes the United States is "on the path to ending the war."
Trump told reporters that Iran wants to reach an agreement, adding, "We'll see how things go," and noting that he received direct communication from the Iranian side without revealing its details.
On another note, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced today (Thursday) the expulsion of a Swedish diplomat in response to a similar step taken by Stockholm yesterday, describing the Swedish action as "unjustified."
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that it also summoned the Swedish ambassador in Tehran and protested against his country's policies towards Tehran.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry stated yesterday that it summoned the Iranian ambassador and requested that an official at the Iranian embassy in Stockholm leave the country, citing activities that contradict the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
