The dollar maintained its gains to remain at its highest level in seven weeks today, following the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike and its indication of the possibility of further increases in the coming months, while traders are now focusing on how the central banks in the UK and Japan will respond to inflationary pressures.
The euro declines and the yen hits a low
The strength of the dollar led to a decline in the euro to $1.1463, approaching its lowest level in seven weeks, while the British pound stabilized at $1.3372 ahead of the Bank of England meeting scheduled for later.
Meanwhile, the Japanese yen hovered near its lowest level in two weeks at 155.98 yen per dollar, as markets awaited the Bank of Japan's decision tomorrow (Friday).
The dollar index, which measures the performance of the US currency against a basket of currencies, recorded a level of 100.3 in its latest trades, nearing its strongest levels since July 31.
The yield curve of Treasury bonds flattened following the Federal Reserve's decision, with two-year bond yields, which are the most sensitive to interest rate changes, remaining at their highest level since 2024, recording 4.7153%, while the yields on the benchmark 10-year bonds slightly fell below the pivotal 5% level.
Rise in bond yields
The dollar experienced a sharp rise alongside the increase in US Treasury yields, following the new Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh joining a unanimous decision to raise interest rates, as officials confirmed an approach leaning towards tightening monetary policy and anticipated another increase in 2026.
Carol Kong, a currency strategist at one of the banks, stated: "Warsh appeared more inclined to tighten monetary policy than expected, and his provision of guidance on future increases surprised the markets, prompting them to adjust their monetary policy expectations to higher levels, which ultimately led to the rise of the greenback."
Kong expects the value of the dollar to rise based on her outlook for the decisions of the Federal Open Market Committee.
