The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, revealed that the shift towards reliance on electric energy enjoys strong and ongoing support from global financial markets, noting the stability of this trend despite challenges related to distribution network capacities and high costs.
Increasing Demand
He explained to reporters during a joint conference with the Minister of Energy of South Korea: “The demand for electricity is increasing at a rate three times faster than the total demand for energy,” adding that 61% of global energy investments this year were directed towards the electricity sector, compared to 39% for fossil fuels.
Financial Solutions
Birol identified two main obstacles facing the expansion of electricity use, the first being the insufficient capacity of electrical networks to connect power generation centers with consumption centers, and the second being the necessity to keep electricity prices low to encourage consumers to prefer it, pointing out the possibility of government intervention through financial solutions.
