The United Kingdom has held the Houthi militia fully responsible for the escalation in Yemen, condemning their continued attacks on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the escalation of military operations within Yemen, and the threat to international navigation and regional stability.
UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Kate Foster, stated during a Security Council session on Yemen yesterday: "The Houthi militia's attacks on the Kingdom last night resulted in the injury of 13 civilians, caused damage to homes and residential areas, and disrupted commercial air traffic," affirming her country's solidarity with the Kingdom and the Yemeni government and their right to defend their security and sovereignty in accordance with international law.
Threat to International Navigation
She pointed out that the Houthi militia seeks to enhance its control along the Yemeni coast of the Red Sea and around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, warning that this poses a direct threat to one of the most important global shipping routes and the freedom of navigation that the global economy relies on.
Displacement of More Than 126,000 People
Foster explained that more than 126,000 people have been displaced so far due to the escalation, with expectations of an increase in that number, noting warnings from humanitarian organizations about the repercussions of the situation around Marib, along with rising indicators of food insecurity and health and protection needs, especially for women and children.
She expressed her country's concern regarding reports of increasing harm to civilians and the displaced, as well as damage to civilian infrastructure, schools, and homes, and the disruption of humanitarian aid access, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of relief workers, UN personnel, and diplomatic missions held by the Houthi militia.
Iranian Support for the Houthis
She affirmed that ongoing Iranian support for the Houthi militia contributes to enabling attacks that threaten civilians, neighboring countries, maritime security, and opportunities for peace, urging all member states to fulfill their obligations under Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2140 and 2216, and to prevent the transfer of weapons and military support to the Houthi militia.
Call to Cease Attacks
The United Kingdom reiterated its support for the UN-led peace process, calling on the Houthi militia to cease its attacks, de-escalate, and return to the path of peace.
