Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced today (Tuesday) that Turkey has made significant efforts since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war to keep the Black Sea out of the conflict, emphasizing that the extension of the war to the sea is unacceptable.
Fidan said at a press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov, following their discussions in the capital Baku today, that the escalation of the war seriously affects the Black Sea basin, and that Turkey has succeeded, until recently, in keeping the Black Sea out of the conflict thanks to its precise implementation of the Montreux Convention on the Straits and the execution of the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
He added that the increasing attacks in recent months on civilian ships in the Black Sea are causing severe damage to the safety of lives, property, navigation, and the environment in the region, expressing his sorrow for the loss of lives among Turkish and Azerbaijani sailors in the attacks.
Fidan pointed out that Turkey has issued the necessary warnings to the concerned parties, expressing his belief that it is possible to reach a consensus on this issue if the necessary political will is shown and good faith is acted upon.
Regarding the Iranian file, Fidan called for the need to resolve the ongoing dispute between Iran and the United States through diplomatic means as soon as possible, explaining that the increasing mutual attacks in recent times seriously hinder peace efforts.
The Turkish Foreign Minister urged an immediate end to actions that increase tension in the region, stating: "Safe, continuous, and free passage through the Strait of Hormuz must be allowed, and a return to the status quo before the war should happen as soon as possible."
He noted that Turkey continues its uninterrupted communications with all concerned parties to resolve the crisis and establish peace and security in the region.
