Russia denied the existence of any quid pro quo with Washington linking the resolution of the crisis with Iran to reaching a settlement for the war in Ukraine, at a time when Iranian and Ukrainian issues are intertwined in Russian-American communications, coinciding with Tehran's hardening of its conditions for returning to the negotiating table and the escalation of tensions in maritime corridors.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed today (Tuesday) that Moscow has not offered the United States any deal that involves resolving the Iranian file in exchange for settling the Ukrainian war, without revealing whether the two issues were discussed together during recent communications between the two countries.
Regarding the Ukrainian file, Lavrov emphasized that Russia will not halt fighting during peace negotiations, while direct communications between Moscow and Washington continue regarding the chances of reaching a settlement.
Lavrov explained that he will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York, but did not disclose details about the timing of the meeting or the issues that will dominate their discussions.
This coincided with the continuation of American pressure on Iran and its allies.
The U.S. Treasury Department imposed new sanctions yesterday on the Russian bank "VTB," accusing it of helping Tehran evade sanctions and build financial channels to facilitate trade and financial coordination between Russia and Iran.
The Treasury stated that the bank established banking relations with sanctioned Iranian institutions and assisted in transferring frozen Iranian assets.
In contrast, Tehran has closed the door on any unconditional negotiations, with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Mohsen Rezaei, stating that his country will not enter into negotiations with Washington until its conditions are met, criticizing what he described as the contradictory messages from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding dialogue.
This position came after Trump announced that Iran wants to reach an agreement and that Washington is open to discussing entering negotiations.
