Finland has announced its decision to join the "Advanced Nuclear Deterrence" initiative proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron to European countries.
Helsinki and Paris stated in a joint statement that "a nuclear steering team will be formed in the coming months to begin implementing this cooperation."
Finnish President Alexander Stubb said via the "X" platform that the French initiative primarily aims to enhance European security and prevent escalation, without being a substitute for NATO's nuclear deterrence.
He added that NATO and the European Union remain Finland's priority frameworks for action, emphasizing that his country does not intend to allow the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory in peacetime.
So far, 10 countries have joined the French nuclear deterrence initiative.
For his part, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov refrained from commenting on Finland's decision to join the French initiative.
Peskov said, in response to a question during a press statement: "Honestly, I do not fully understand what this concept entails, and I still need to review some details, so I will refrain from making any comments on this matter for now."
