The Israeli army destroyed a network of tunnels belonging to "Hezbollah" in the Ali al-Taher Heights in southern Lebanon, using more than 1,100 tons of explosives, in an operation it claimed targeted underground infrastructure designated for carrying out attacks against Israel.
The army published footage it said documented its operations in the area, explaining that its forces had worked over the past months to destroy the party's underground infrastructure, and that the 36th Division executed a deception and diversion operation to cross the Litani River and gain operational control over the Chateau de Shkif, before the "Commando" forces took control of the Ali al-Taher Heights.
Iranian Weapons Underground
The footage released by the Israeli army, according to its narrative, showed the killing of members of "Hezbollah" who were moving inside an opening of an underground passage, before the "Yahalom" unit specialized in tunnels entered to clear the site.
The army stated that the network extended over more than two kilometers and included dozens of Iranian-made rockets, shells, and drones, in addition to machine guns, anti-tank missiles, and hundreds of mines and explosive devices, as well as a command center belonging to the "Badr" unit in the party.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.1 magnitude earthquake in southern Lebanon following the explosions.
Washington: Dialogue Continues
Despite the field escalation, the United States confirmed the continuation of consultations between Israel and Lebanon under American sponsorship, noting that the next round of talks will be held in Rome soon.
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department stated that both sides are engaged in ongoing dialogue, accusing "Hezbollah" of remaining an obstacle to peace, and calling on the Lebanese government to devise a disarmament plan that includes all Lebanese areas.
Europe Discusses "Post-UNIFIL"
As the mandate of the "UNIFIL" forces approaches its end in December 2026, European capitals are discussing the future of international presence in southern Lebanon, amidst proposals to establish a multinational European force, which faces obstacles, the most prominent of which is the lack of American support and Israel's rejection of any European role.
According to a diplomatic source, the European Union is moving towards strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese state instead of deploying a new force, through an aid program that includes the army, security forces, training, equipment, and border monitoring.
The Union had provided around 220 million euros in support of the Lebanese security sector since 2023, while European foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced that more than 10 member states are ready to contribute to a new mission to provide advice and training to Lebanese forces.
