The United States imposed sanctions on all remaining Iranian airlines on Tuesday, with President Donald Trump vowing to maintain a strong and effective blockade on Iran, asserting that Iran was very close to acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Trump said during a press conference: "We are waging a war because there is a certain country that aspired to possess a nuclear weapon, was very close to obtaining it, and now has no chance of achieving that," adding: "The work being done by the military is incredible; the blockade has been very strong and effective."
Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury Department stated that its recent action targets 36 entities providing support to the Iranian aviation sector, which the regime uses to transport weapons, individuals, and illicit shipments. The department noted that the sanctions, which are part of the "economic pariah" campaign, also target front companies, foreign brokers, and convoluted shipping routes used by Iran to acquire American-made aircraft and sensitive technology.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control, the financial crime enforcement network of the U.S. Treasury, issued a warning to financial institutions regarding purchasing networks supporting the Iranian aviation sector, urging them to report suspicious activities related to these networks.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott P. Amey stated in a statement that Washington is moving forward with imposing severe consequences on entities providing a financial lifeline to the Iranian regime, warning companies dealing with Iranian airlines that they risk being cut off from the global financial system.
The sanctions included 27 Iranian airlines under Executive Order 13902, due to their operations in the Iranian aviation sector. According to the U.S. Treasury, the action also targets companies in third countries that assisted the U.S.-sanctioned "Mahan Air" in activities related to the proliferation of weapons, terrorism-related transfers, and the illegal purchase of American-made aircraft.
It clarified that "Mahan Air" received at least three Boeing 777 aircraft during the summer of 2026, which were rerouted with the help of companies and brokers in third countries, aimed at transferring American-made aircraft to the Iranian company.
Sanctions were also imposed on several companies and individuals that Washington claims participated in these operations, and the U.S. Treasury also targeted companies providing shipping services and general sales agents that served international flights for "Mahan Air."
The U.S. Treasury stated that some of these companies coordinated shipments, including components for drones and industrial equipment heading to Iran, while other companies coordinated shipments of American-made parts to Iran on behalf of "Mahan Air."
OFAC also announced the suspension of three licenses related to Iranian aviation, including licenses that allowed overflight, and others that permitted non-U.S. airlines to operate American-made or U.S.-controlled commercial aircraft to Iran.
It clarified that requests for licenses related to aviation safety will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The Treasury emphasized that any foreign company or individual assisting sanctioned Iranian airlines, whether through aircraft transfers, shipping services, or sales agent services, may face severe sanctions and financial consequences.
This move comes as part of the "economic pariah" campaign launched by the U.S. Treasury on August 24, 2026, aimed at tightening the revenue and financing sources relied upon by the Iranian regime and the Revolutionary Guard, covering sectors such as oil, energy, finance, aviation, and others.
Under the new sanctions, all properties and interests of the listed entities and individuals within the United States or controlled by U.S. persons are frozen, and transactions conducted by U.S. persons or occurring within or through the United States with the listed entities are generally prohibited unless licensed or exempted.
