A commander in the Basij forces affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard was killed in an attack in the city of Rask in the Sistan and Baluchestan province in the southeast of the country, according to Iranian media reports, while no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The Iranian news agency "Tasnim" reported that Abdul Raouf Ishaqi, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard resistance area in the city of Barood in the Rask province, was killed following a terrorist attack.
The agency added that security forces are continuing to pursue the attackers and monitor their movements, noting that more details regarding the circumstances of the incident will be announced later.
The Iranian reports did not specify the nature of the attack or the number of participants, nor did they reveal the group behind it, amid ongoing security operations in the area.
Sistan and Baluchestan province, located in the far southeast of Iran on the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan, is one of the regions most affected by armed attacks and security disturbances, where security forces and the Revolutionary Guard face repeated assaults.
Armed groups opposing the Iranian government are active in the province, most notably the "Jaish al-Adl" group, which has previously claimed responsibility for attacks targeting security forces, the Revolutionary Guard, and government facilities in the area.
This incident comes days after Iranian reports indicated the killing of two members of the Revolutionary Guard in an armed attack near the city of Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan province, in the latest series of attacks in the region.
The Iranian authorities have faced security challenges in the province for years, characterized by its unique demographic composition and border location, amid mutual accusations regarding armed activity and smuggling operations across the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan.
