في إسقاط متأخر لواحد من أشد الأسرار الاستخباراتية غموضاً في الشرق الأوسط، أزاحت إسرائيل الستار رسمياً عن مسؤوليتها المباشرة عن إنهاء حياة العميد السوري محمد سليمان مهندس المفاعل النووي السوري في دير الزور والشخصية الأشد نفوذاً وضبابية في الدائرة المغلقة للرئيس المعزول بشار الأسد.
كشف رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي الأسبق، إيهود أولمرت، في مذكراته «أريزونا كولانو» الصادرة عن صحيفة «يديعوت أحرونوت»، كواليس العملية السرية التي نفذتها فرقة النخبة البحرية (وحدة «شايطيت 13») في الأول من أغسطس 2008:
- الإنزال الخفي: تسللت مجموعة من الضفادع البشرية والقناصة من أعمق نقطة في البحر نحو ساحل مدينة طرطوس دون أن تثير أي ريبة، رغم وجود أشخاص على الشاطئ.
- الهدف في المرمى: تمركزت القوة القاتلة على مسافة لا تتعدى 150 متراً من شرفة كان يجلس فيها سليمان مع ضيوفه، حيث جرت مطابقة صورته وتحديد هويته بدقة متناهية.
- 3 رصاصات حاسمة: باغت القناصة «صندوق أسرار دمشق» بثلاث رصاصات مركزة أصابت مؤخرة عنقه، ليسقط صريعاً في الحال قبل أن تنسحب القوة نحو مياه البحر وتختفي عبر قارب إجلاء سريع.
ورغم فرض نظام الأسد صمتاً إعلامياً مطلقاً عقب الحادثة، فإن الوثائق الاستخباراتية المسربة عبر «ذا إنترسبت» و«ويكيليكس» كانت قد وجهت أصابع الاتهام فوراً نحو الكوماندوز الإسرائيلي، بالنظر لنفوذ سليمان العسكري واللوجستي. ويأتي الاعتراف الإسرائيلي المباشر ليضع حداً نهائياً لسنوات من التخمينات حول العملية.
In a late revelation of one of the most enigmatic intelligence secrets in the Middle East, Israel officially lifted the veil on its direct responsibility for the termination of the life of Syrian Brigadier General Mohammed Suleiman, the architect of the Syrian nuclear reactor in Deir ez-Zor and the most influential and obscure figure in the inner circle of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad.
The former Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, revealed in his memoir "Arizona Kolano," published by the newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth," the behind-the-scenes of the secret operation carried out by the elite naval unit (Shayetet 13) on August 1, 2008:
- The covert landing: A group of frogmen and snipers infiltrated from the deepest point in the sea towards the coast of the city of Tartus without raising any suspicion, despite the presence of people on the beach.
- The target in sight: The killing force positioned itself no more than 150 meters from the balcony where Suleiman was sitting with his guests, where his image was matched and his identity was precisely confirmed.
- 3 decisive bullets: The snipers ambushed the "Damascus Secret Box" with three concentrated shots that struck the back of his neck, causing him to fall dead instantly before the force withdrew to the sea and disappeared via a fast evacuation boat.
And despite the Assad regime imposing an absolute media silence following the incident, the leaked intelligence documents through "The Intercept" and "WikiLeaks" had immediately pointed fingers at the Israeli commandos, given Suleiman's military and logistical influence. The direct Israeli acknowledgment comes to put a definitive end to years of speculation about the operation.
