وجّهت السلطات الأمريكية اتهامات ثقيلة لقاصر تبلغ 17 عامًا على خلفية هجوم مسلّح استهدف مسجدًا في مدينة (سان دييغو) بولاية كاليفورنيا في مايو الماضي، بعد أن كشفت التحقيقات أنها ساعدت منفذي الهجوم في بثّه مباشرة عبر الإنترنت ونشر تسجيلاته والبيان المصاحب له.
وأعلنت هيئة محلفين كبرى في ولاية كارولاينا الشمالية توجيه ثلاث تهم بالقتل العمد من الدرجة الأولى إلى سارة سانتياغو، إضافة إلى تهمة التآمر لارتكاب القتل العمد، وذلك على خلفية الهجوم الذي وقع في 18 مايو وأسفر عن مقتل ثلاثة رجال، بينهم حارس أمن، قبل أن يقدم المهاجمان كاليب فاسكيز (18 عامًا) وكاين كلارك (17 عامًا) على الانتحار.
وتشير لائحة الاتهام إلى أن سانتياغو لم تكتفِ بالمساعدة في بث الهجوم ونشر محتواه، بل قامت أيضًا بشراء شارة تحمل رمزًا نازيًا لفاسكيز ارتداها أثناء تنفيذ الجريمة، كما كشفت الوثائق عن مشاركتها في التخطيط لهجوم آخر لم يُنفذ، كان يستهدف معبدًا يهوديًا وطلابًا أميركيين من أصل إفريقي في مدرسة ثانوية.
وبحسب مكتب المدعي العام جيمس أونيل، ستُحاكم سانتياغو بصفتها شخصًا بالغًا نظرًا لخطورة التهم الموجهة إليها، فيما تواصل السلطات التحقيق في تفاصيل المخطط الذي سبق الهجوم، وسط اهتمام واسع من الجهات المعنية بمكافحة التطرف العنيف.
The American authorities have brought serious charges against a 17-year-old minor in connection with an armed attack targeting a mosque in San Diego, California, last May, after investigations revealed that she assisted the attackers in broadcasting the incident live online and disseminating its recordings along with the accompanying statement.
A grand jury in North Carolina announced three counts of first-degree murder against Sarah Santiago, in addition to a charge of conspiracy to commit murder, related to the attack that occurred on May 18 and resulted in the deaths of three men, including a security guard, before the attackers, Caleb Vasquez (18) and Kane Clark (17), committed suicide.
The indictment indicates that Santiago not only helped in broadcasting the attack and disseminating its content but also purchased a badge featuring a Nazi symbol for Vasquez, which he wore during the crime. Documents also revealed her involvement in planning another attack that was not carried out, targeting a Jewish temple and African American students at a high school.
According to District Attorney James O'Neill, Santiago will be tried as an adult due to the severity of the charges against her, while authorities continue to investigate the details of the plot that preceded the attack, amid widespread interest from stakeholders in combating violent extremism.
