The Indonesian authorities began investigating today (Monday) reports that some of its citizens have joined the Russian army and are participating in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta announced in a statement that it is currently investigating the information received from Ukrainian authorities, in coordination with several ministries and government institutions. The ministry did not specify the number of Indonesians suspected of being involved.
If the information is confirmed, these fighters may face the risk of losing their citizenship under Indonesian law, which requires citizens to obtain presidential permission before joining a foreign army.
The ministry stated that "if it is proven that Indonesian citizens have joined the armed forces of a foreign country, this is considered an individual act and does not represent the policy or position of the Indonesian government."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that information regarding the identity of the individuals mentioned, their citizenship status, their recruitment process, and the nature of their involvement still needs further verification. It added that the Indonesian government will also investigate the possibility of fraud, exploitation, or recruitment through job offers that do not align with the intended purpose.
Traditionally, Indonesia has not been one of the countries whose citizens go to fight as mercenaries alongside Russia or Ukraine, although both sides have recruited foreign fighters throughout the war.
Reports have indicated that citizens from African countries have been forcibly recruited into the Russian army to fight in Ukraine after being lured with promises of employment abroad.
